Sherri James, who is producing the movie of our book Far From the Tree, was told by a "friend" that she was probably too old to make it happen--BTW Sherri is WAY WAY younger than we are. We re-posted her blog here on our blog. Tell us what you think. Do dreams have an age limit? A "use by" date?
I may get shot for replying to this blog, being that I am only 22 lol. But I think there is no age limit for dreamers. I feel that we should always be working towards a goal whether we are 18 or 81. If you stop dreaming what will motivate you?
At 35 I decided to return to school for a degree in Creative Writing. Many people scoffed - not only because I was 35 attempting to earn my first undergraduate degree, but then to do so in something as frivolous as Creative Writing was seen an utter waste of time and wholly irresponsible. Well, two full times gigs and six years later, I've just earned my B.A. in Creative Writing from NYU and will begin grad school there in the fall for film production - one of only 36 students admitted to the program each year. The long and short of it is, I'm living my dreams, not just waking from them and it feels marvelous - and all the more so at 41 years wise. ;-)
You're never too old to dream. Dreams give you permission to be as creative as you want to be and the canvas to be as grand as you can paint. The greatest dream for me was to be a good mother to a son and a daughter. Here I am... 20 years after that dream I have my son and my daughter who are indeed the greatest people I know and the greatest thing that I can do for them is to continue to encourage their dreams and support each one. As a child my dreams of becoming someone creative were discouraged because in my family, it was more important to get a job that paid consistently and not something that could possibly not sustain me and whatever my family dynamic might be. So I did the television thing... I met a guy when I was 20. Dated him until I was 27. We got married and the following year our son was born. We broke up at 29.
I married and made more than my happy little family a dream... eventually that dream became a reality and in my most real moment, I packed up my 100 pairs of shoes and 10 pair of sneakers, and kept it moving without the dreamy fairy tale husband.
So... in 2008 here I am on the other side of a marriage and two dreamy and monumental relationships later with two children and even bigger dreams. I love to dream because the dreams keep me on my toes because with those dreams come greater realities...
