Yesterday, we received and answered one hundred and four book related emails, text and voice messages. That doesn’t count reader email—just the ones having to do with the impending publication of Uptown, our seventh novel. [We are best friends who’ve been co-writing women’s fiction for twenty of our twenty seven years of friendship. For more information about who we are, what we do and/or to read an excerpt of Uptown please visit http://deberryandgrant.com.] We know from experience that the overstuffed inbox is a sure sign we are transitioning from our grubby writer persona you know, the distracted, semi-human who hasn’t actually looked in the mirror to see if her clothes match or if she’s combed her hair, because she’s got hot words to spew and the ominous shadow of a deadline looming. But now, ready or not, we are becoming ta- da—The Author!
(Yes, there are two of us, but we still call ourselves the author because it’s important that our stories read in one voice). As DeBerry and Grant, the Author, we look pulled together in a suitably quirky or moderately fashionable sort of way and we have answers at the ready to entertain and enlighten no matter when, where or what we are asked. The Writer and The Author require different skill sets and the transition is not always easy.
